Hello sailors heading for the Pacific,
This information about the Galapagos might be interesting for you.

We arrived at the Galapagos Island San Cristobal, we had to pay the following amounts of money (all US $) to the Port Captain:
  • Arrival 0,014 * GRT (weight of the boat)
  • Channel Access 0,21 * GRT
  • Anchoring fee 2,21 * GRT
  • Frequency (?) 10,35
  • Control Contamination 4,41
  • Zarpe 0,014 * GRT
  • Formats (?) 0,31
  • Light Dues 3,00 * GRT
  • For our boat (GRT=10) the total was 69,55 US $.
  • You pay also 30 US Dollar (for one boat) to immigration, so total 99,55 US $.
The Port Captain told us several times that we could only stay in harbour of San Cristobal, and were not allowed to go to another place. He even got a map to show our route from San Cristobal to Easter Island, and no where else.

But, we met Bolivar. Bolivar told us that he could arrange a cruising permit for all the official harbours in the Galapagos, for 50 US $. I never heard of this before, and I did not trust it. So finally he offered to do it free for us, because we were his first customers. And indeed, after 3 workingdays he did have a permit (a fax from Quito) for us to go to all the harbours. I asked the port captain about it, and he told us that it was a good permit and we were allowed to go to any official harbour for 30 days. Of course I paid Bolivar some money and gave a bottle of wine (he likes wine very much).

We went to Isabela (don't miss it), and it worked. We only needed to pay about 2 US $ each day for anchoring, a national zarpe and so on. After Isabela we went back to San Cristobal to pick up some friends, and we headed for Santa Cruz. In Santa Cruz also no problem at all. The fees you pay is 4 US $ total (7 days).

I do not know how it is possible, but enjoy it. It is really very good, because if you want to see all the animals of the Galapagos, you have to visit the different islands.

Here is the address of Bolivar:
Bolivar Pesantes Palma, naugala@ecuenlace.com, tel:. 05-520846, fax: 05-520958. San Cristobal.

A warning about the Port Captains, at least one is very corrupt, Mr. Mieles on San Cristobal. He has put other sailors succesfully under pressure to pay money under the table (for instance if you have liquor on board what is illegal according to him, he says then: I help you, if you help me). Do not pay him, ask for his boss (Mr. Gordon). Also he sold fuel for 2 US $ a gallon, I paid 1,02 US $ at the fuel station. He also offers water, but there is free potable water at the hospital in San Christobal. He will come to your boat, asking for things, terrible.

Greetings,
Jelle and Yvonne

PS1.
If you are sending us an email, we will not be able to answer it for a long time because of our cruising to Easter Island, Pitcairn and so on.

PS2.
Karsten, unfortunality we did not meet again, so we still own you a cup of coffee. Thanks again for the ride to the dentist. They had a great day, I spent 175 US $.
